Costumed guides tell a fascinating tale at the Doukhobor Dugout House National Historic Site located southeast of Blaine Lake. Exiled from their homeland, Russian Doukhobors settled in the area in 1899, digging into the river ravine for shelter. These tenacious settlers lived in the Dugout Houses until 1904 when log houses were built. Visitors are asked to respect this delicate archaeological site that is located on private property. Strenuous walking is involved to get to site. Tours include: Doukhobor dugout house, Ospennia Spring, the new Doukhobor barn, Banya, Tolstoy house, Museum of artifacts, Gift shop and Donna’s Doukhobor Prayer Home.

New in 2025, the Doukhobor Dugout House National Historic Site will host a different event each Saturday: July 5 Frienship Day, July 12 Ancestors Leaving Footprints, July 19 History Day, July 26 Timeless Memories, August 2 Blankets and Quilts, August 9 Spirit Wrestlers, August 16 Tourism and Peace, August 23 Embrace the Journey - Our Story, as well as Murder Mystery, a special after dark event August 7.

Before or after your tour, relax on the outdoor patio, Peter Verigin The Lordly, overlooking the river valley. Food and beverages will be served. Tour participants are welcome to purchase loaves of Doukhobor bread by advance order and pre-payment online.

Historical Themed Overnight Experiences - Book an overnight off grid experience overlooking the river bank. Stay in a unique wooden pod, enjoy tasty and classic Doukhobor meals, guided tour and story time.
