Containment Orders Issued for Lake of the Prairies
Containment Orders have been issued for Lake of the Prairies due to the presence of invasive mussel veligers (the larval stage of invasive mussels). The orders are intended to help prevent the spread of invasive mussels to other Saskatchewan waterbodies.
The containment area applies from the Highway 357 crossing of the Assiniboine River to the entirety of Lake of the Prairies. Manitoba has also established a containment zone for its portion of Lake of the Prairies and requires watercraft and equipment leaving the lake to be decontaminated before being used in another waterbody.
Invasive mussels are commonly spread when watercraft or water-related equipment move between waterbodies without first being cleaned, drained, dried and, when required, decontaminated. Containment orders help reduce the risk of invasive mussels being introduced to new areas.
Anyone operating a watercraft or using water-related equipment in Lake of the Prairies should ensure they comply with the containment order, including obtaining decontamination when required before visiting another waterbody.
