Saskatchewan weather – we love to talk about it!
Saskatchewan's weather is the topic of many a conversation. From winter Chinooks, to autumn Indian summers, to summer thunderstorms. Our climate is four-season and variable. Spring, summer, fall and winter are distinct, and temperatures can fluctuate - sometimes dramatically.
Seasonal Averages
Saskatchewan summers are usually warm and dry. High temperatures range from 15 C (60 F) in May to the mid-30s C (90-95 F) in July and August. We average the most sunshine of any Canadian province; nights tend be cool. Winter normally begins in November and temperatures generally remain below the freezing point. Mild spring weather usually begins by April.
Metric Conversion for Weather
Canadian weather reports are given in metric terms. Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (C), precipitation in millimetres, snowfall in centimetres and wind speed & visibility in kilometres per hour.
Celsius to Fahrenheit
F = Temperature C x 1.8, then add 32
0C = 32F
10C = 50F
20C = 68F
Be Sun Safe While Visiting Saskatchewan!
Saskatchewan averages the most sunshine of any Canadian province and because of this the Canadian Cancer Society wants to remind everyone about the importance of protecting your skin from the sun this summer!
Natural sunlight is important to good health, but too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays increases the risk of sunburns, skin cancer and cataracts. While outdoors, enjoying all that Saskatchewan has to offer, we encourage you to protect yourself and your family.
Take precautions between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are at their strongest or any time of day when the UV Index™ is 3 or higher.
SLIP! on some clothes. Cover your arms and legs with tightly woven, light- weight clothing.
SLAP! on a hat! Wear a wide-brimmed hat that shades your head, face, ears and neck.
SLOP! on some sunscreen. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) 15 or higher and SPF 30 if you will be outside for most of the day. Apply 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply as directed on the bottle.
SLIDE! on sunglasses that have UV protection to keep your eyes safe.
SEEK! shade. Bring an umbrella if you have to create your own.
SLURP! up some water to keep your body hydrated.
Don’t let a sun burn ruin your vacation. Be Sun Safe!!
