4 Family-friendly Winter Activities Along Saskatoon’s Meewasin Valley

Frost naturally decorates the trees, cross-country skiers hit the trails and fat bikers bundle up – these are just a few familiar sights in a Saskatchewan winter. Saskatoon’s Meewasin Valley is no different. The recreational park and trail system offers an assortment of activities to embrace the season.

1. Feed and photograph feathered friends

A cherished winter experience is a visit to Beaver Creek Conservation Area, located 13 km south of Saskatoon. Enjoy spectacular views of this unique area, where prairie creek meets river. After taking in the scenery, try feeding the black-capped chickadees who call the area home – a Disney moment if there ever was one. This is a great location for photographing birds.

2. Strap on skates

What’s not to love about skating on the Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink @ Nutrien Plaza? Meewasin hosts multiple skating parties, which offer refreshments and always feature something unique. Can you taste the hot chocolate already?

3. Discover nature and wildlife in your backyard

Meewasin adventures are reminders that Saskatoon really is the best of both worlds – dynamic urban experiences in sync with nature. One moment you may be cross-country skiing or fat biking past activities underway in River Landing. In no time, you are crossing paths with elusive species that thrive in the safe haven of the Meewasin Valley.

4. Hike, ski or bike the trails

The Meewasin Trail is maintained and cleared year round. Sutherland Beach’s beautifully forested hiking and ski trails wind their way along the South Saskatchewan River. Bring your canine friends and let them roam in the off-leash dog park.

Fat biking is popular on a section of the trail between Gabriel Dumont Park and Diefenbaker Park. The Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, southwest of the city, offers groomed trails sanctioned for fat biking.
