Making memories at the Motherwell Homestead

The Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site, near Abernethy, opens after the May long weekend for another season of fun on the farm. The homestead is where W. R. Motherwell made his mark on Western Canada’s agricultural history.

Here are some activities offered at the Motherwell Homestead this season.

Daily

Motherwell Homestead
Explore the original stone house of W.R. Motherwell, the Grand Old Man of Agriculture, and discover his influence in the development of farming practices on the prairies. Join staff at work in the fields, caring for the animals or tending to the grounds and property. Indulge in freshly made flavours at the Off the Beaten Path Café and take a stroll along the wetland trail.

 

 

Stueck Nature Walk Trail

 

Motherwell Homestead
Pack a picnic lunch and hike the 1.5-km trail to a nearby wetland that is habitat to a variety of birds. There is perfect viewing from the observation platform. Take your time and enjoy the comfortable rest area, equipped with picnic tables.

 

Children’s Day Camps

Offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout July and August, the two-day camps welcome children between the ages of 6-12 years. Participants enjoy learning about life on the farm through role-playing, games and crafts. Activities include churning butter and making ice cream. Space is limited. Advanced registration only.

 

Little Red Hen Camps

July 11 and 25; August 1 and 15

Motherwell Homestead
You are never too young to start understanding how to harvest and prepare food. Parents and children between the ages of 1-6 join the Motherwell Homestead’s hired hands for a midday bread baking experience, learning what it takes to make a loaf of bread from start to finish. Space is limited. Advanced registration only.

 

Learn to Camp

July 20-21

Channel your pioneer spirit as you settle in in for a night with family and friends at the homestead. The Motherwell Homestead’s Learn to Camp event, a partnership with Mountain Equipment Co-op, teaches participants how to plan and enjoy safe and successful camping trips. Learn basic camping skills, such as setting up a tent, outdoor cooking and more. Space is limited. Advanced registration only.

 

Binding and Stooking: Taste of the Homestead

August 10

Join the staff at Motherwell Homestead for some hard but happy labour, harvesting golden wheat the old-fashioned way. The event is an opportunity to learn where your food comes from and taste the benefits of your work - warm homemade bread with hand churned butter melting on top of every loaf. Taste of the Homestead is a fun-filled day from field to fork.

 

Symphony Under the Sky Festival

August 24

A jam-packed day of celebration, Symphony Under the Sky Festival features threshing demonstrations, the renowned Field to Fork Festival, children's activities and an afternoon performance by the Regina Symphony Orchestra. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and enjoy a spectacular concert under the prairie sky, with a cold glass of Bushwakker exclusive Motherwell Red Fife Witbier​ in hand.
