The hamlet of Frenchman Butte is located 18 km northwest of Paradise Hill on Hwy 797. Deep with historic connections, the community is perched on the northern bank of the North Saskatchewan River. It takes its name from the nearby historic site of Frenchman Butte; a name that refers to a large area hill and has origins in the early 1800s. The name is attributed to the murder of an unknown Frenchman at the hill, who for reasons unknown displeased the local First Nations and was killed.
The Carlton Trail also passes by the community's locale connecting Forts Garry, Carlton and Edmonton and in 1885 the community was the site of a skirmish between the Cree warriors led by Wandering Spirit and the forces of General Strange.
