Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area is the first protected area in Canada and home to the oldest bird sanctuary in North America, featuring great birding in mid-May and fall staging during September and October. Over 300 bird species migrate through the area, and many species nest and raise their young here. Public facilities at this site on the north end of Last Mountain Lake include self-guided trails, an observation tower, a picnic site, and washrooms. A new interpretive pavilion is built and will open to the public upon its completion.
The site is open year round during daylight hours only. Some roads are not maintained in winter.
