A canoeist's paradise, the Northern Settlement of Missinipe is situated on Walker Bay, the westernmost arm of Otter Lake, one of the Churchill River's medium-sized, slower and deeper lakes. The community, 80 km northeast of La Ronge off Hwy 102, derived its name from the Cree name for the Churchill River, 'mahttawi-sipiy' which means ' difficult river.'
Quiet during the winter, the area comes alive in the summer as fishermen, canoeists and other outdoor enthusiasts flock to the Churchill River and pass through to the further reaches of northern Saskatchewan. A small campground nearby on Otter Lake offers seasonal camping, birdwatching and excellent fishing.
